Recently I started craving a
drink that I remember from the 70's, the
Orange Julius. And I am not talking about the way too sweet kind you get at the
food court in the mall, but the authentic one my mother used to make blending real
egg whites,
orange juice,
sugar,
vanilla, ice and
milk. So I started looking at
recipes online and most of them called for crazy amounts of sugar, and then I found one site that had a great suggestion. Instead of liquid egg whites, use egg white powder. Well lucky for me the
Jay Robb Vanilla eggwhite powder I found was sweetened with stevia so no sugar is needed for the drink! An additional bonus is that I didn't have to deal with the mess of cracking
eggs - I just dumped a scoop full of powder in my blender and wha-la instant
protein! And yet another good idea I found online was to add, along with the orange juice, a real whole orange, well minus the rind. This works if you have a
Vita Mix because it completely pummels the orange into a liquid in a nano second and gives more substance to the drink. One thing people could not seem to agree on as I pursued through various recipes is the amount of
ice cubes as some like it thicker than others. I actually didn't use any particular amounts of the ingredients, instead I just guesstimated based on the way I like it and I made a spectacularly frothy drink that my kids and I devoured! It was a great way for them to start their day as it contains, fruit and protein yet tastes like
dessert- well, maybe that is because I let them squirt
whip cream on top of it!
My Healthy Orange Julius-I am not sure about exact amounts as I just dump things in the blender as I feel like, but it goes something like this, and not sure how much it serves, you have to experiment!
Mix in blender -
8 large icecubes
1 cup milk
1 cup orange
1 tsp vanilla (i actually haven't remembered to use this yet and turned out fine)
Pour into glass, and enjoy!
