Higher Food Prices Hit the Most Vulnerable

While the higher cost of gas and food is hard on everyone it is hitting the poorest segment of our population the hardest. In Chicago, inner city markets open at midnight on the first of each month when people get their food stamps renewed. Those on food stamps are beginning to run out in the middle of the month - the same allotment used to get them through the entire month.  "People with incomes below the poverty threshold are in dire straits because not only are food prices increasing but the food stamps they are receiving have not increased," said Dr. Cook, an associate professor at Boston University's medical school who has studied the food stamp program and how it affects children. MSNBC.
