Skin Check

bigstockphoto_Beautiful_Girl_With_Gorgeous_S_264685.jpg
If you don't already - you should think about getting an annual skin check at your dermatologist. My girlfriend recently had this done and discovered she had a tiny basel cell on her face which was easily removed. She gets these skin checks annually, but I had never done so. I made my appointment and went in for a quick (20 minute) check and yes, he found something to remove and biopsy. Again, he said nothing to worry about but should definitely be having the yearly check.

Get A Ritual

bigstockphoto_Green_Tea_82591.jpg
Take a few minutes each day and just devote them to yourself. In this busy world, time - okay days - seems to fly be without any introspection or self-examination. I am one who seems to not have any time whatsoever. So I recently started the ritual of having a cup of detox herbal tea before my kids even wake up. It is something - albeit small - that I can look forward to every day and know that it gives me a little quiet peace.

Glossy Lips Might Be Bad

bigstockphoto_Lips_373806.jpg
Just because you are putting something on your lips, don't think your covered. Glossy lips might actually attract more of the suns ray, increasing your chance of lip cancer. "These lip glosses can make more of the light rays penetrate directly through the skin instead of getting reflected off of the skin's surface," says Dr. Christine Brown, a dermatologist at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. You're good, however, if your gloss has SPF. Read more at msnbc.

Japan to Measure Waistlines

bigstockphoto_Relaxed_Sumo_1589117-1.jpg

Japan has a new national law where the waistlines of people between the ages of 40 and 74 must be measured as part of their annual check-ups. Those exceeding government limits - 33.5 inches for men and 35.4 inches for women - may be given dieting guidance if after three months they do not lose weight. If necessary, those people will be steered toward further re-education after six more months. The government, aiming to shrink the overweight population, will also impose financial penalties on companies and local governments that fail to meet specific targets. Let's just hope they exempt the sumo wrestlers.

Clarify Salsify

I recently had soup at the Cafe of Love in Mt. Kisco, New York called "black truffle salsify". I asked the waiter which soup to order and he shrugged as if he was indifferent and then said "the lady over there said this soup is the best she has ever had." So I ordered it and though I didn't know what "salsify" was I kind of expected it to come looking like salsa. A creamy delectable soup it was. I inquired and salsify is actually "a root vegetable with a delicate flavour. Also called the oyster plant." Well, I can't find the recipe but I can tell you it was, in fact, the best soup I have ever eaten and good for my body. I would love to hear from anyone who might have a good recipe to match this...

Meditation On The Fly?

meditation.jpg
Think you need to go to an Ashram in India in order to truly meditate? Or maybe you think it requires a quiet place, dim lights, candles? Okay, at a very minimum no screaming kids. This is precisely why I have never allowed myself to engage in meditation because the idea of needing to control my environment to this extent kills the whole concept. But this book and cd set - Meditation for Beginners by Jack Kornfield PhD - explains that meditation isn't about being in some quiet perfect place lost to the world. He offers many practical tips to bring mindfulness and meditation to many of your daily activities including how to breathe, to work with your body sensations, feelings and emotions and to witness your own thoughts. This is all a part of meditation. Amazon.

How Well Do You Control Your Anger?

bigstockphoto_Angry_Couple_2350582.jpg
When you get angry do you find yourself saying and doing things you are not proud of? Are you able to slow down, take note and control yourself, or do you feel the rage controls you? Psychiatrist Jeffrey Brantley MD of Duke University has a simple way to control your anger flare-ups: Mindfulness. "Mindfulness is just the basic human capacity for awareness. We've all used it, even if we haven't given it that name. It's a nonjudging awareness of what's here." Once we direct this mindfulness towards our anger, we are very close to diffusing it. Seems a little mindfulness for all people would go a long way.

Healthy Eating

bigstockphoto_Black_Olives_2377854.jpg
LONDON, May 30 (Reuters) - A Mediterranean diet rich in fruits and vegetables -- already known to protect against heart disease -- also appears to help ward off diabetes, Spanish researchers said last week.

The study published in the British Medical Journal showed that people who stuck closely to the diet were 83 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who did not. Read more at Reuters.

What's Not To Leek?

bigstockphoto_Leeks_1957388.jpg
Leeks are a cousin of the onion, though milder and sweeter than the shallot. Leeks can be tossed raw with salad, sauteed lightly with veggies or cooked in soups. The leek is low in carories, high in iron and vitamins B6 and C. Some will tell you that the leek is beneficial for throat health.

Natural Remedies

bigstockphoto_Acupuncture_Of_The_Back__1502367.jpg
When something ails us, most of us would rather treat it with a natural remedy than with some prescription or what traditional medicine may offer. But the problem becomes determining which alternative remedies really work and which don't. msnbc has set forth six alternative health therapies that really seem to work to relieve a range of ailments, including acupuncture (lower-back, shoulder, neck and knee pain, migraines and fertility problems), biofeedback (headaches, hypertension, stress, urinary incontinence and chronic pain), chasteberry (pms, mood swings, anger, headache, fertility), meditation (stress, anxiety, meditation, focus), st. john's wort (depression and to quit smoking) and Valerian (for mild insomnia)
