Do you want a really good nap?

bigstockphoto_Acupuncture_653799.jpgI am talking about the deepest sleep you can imagine, and waking up feeling completely refreshed?  Well get a guy to stick a bunch of needles in you and it will do the trick! I am not kidding. Acupuncture is the answer (and the cure).
First of all if you have a needle aversion, do not fear.  The needles are hair thin so in most cases you don't feel them one bit.  And after they are inserted, say for allergies, headaches, kidney disease (seriously) or whatever that ails you, a peaceful sleep awaits you.  No joke.  Ask someone who has tried it. It is great.  Sweet dreams!

Smart Way to Hydrate

bigstockphoto_Glass_Of_Water_215042.jpg
There are several ways to help detox your body in healthy ways.  One of them is to hydrate your body each day to support your body's natural flushing abilities.  Add a squeeze of lemon or lime to your glass to get an extra detoxifying effect as they promote an alkaline environment which promote your bodies flush of toxins.  Try to stay away from sodas and caffeinated drinks or other stimulants as they inhibit the detox process.

Reduce Body Soreness

MMB.jpgBig Dipper Wax Works is a small company dedicated to sustainable bee-raising practices.  It's very cool and has great beeswax candles but the product worth the buzz is this warming beeswax-based muscle rub which combines camphor, menthol, eucalyptus, clove and peppermint to stimulate circulation and relieve muscle and joint soreness.  Apply a little before working out and eliminate that post-workout strain.  Also, by visiting their site you can learn how to help the vanishing bees!  It's all good stuff.   Check it out.

Ease your mind... get prepared

bigstockphoto_Red_Cross_56784.jpg

Its not what any of us want to think about it.  Any maybe it's all for naught.  But in this time of relative quiet on the terrorism and major disaster front, maybe we should take a minute and question if we have what we need in our homes in case of a major disaster.  FEMA (because we sooo trust them) recommends the following for a basic home disaster kit:

  • Three-day supply of non-perishable food.
  • Three-day supply of water - one gallon of water per person, per day.
  • Portable, battery-powered radio or television and extra batteries.
  • Flashlight and extra batteries.
  • First aid kit and manual.
  • Sanitation and hygiene items (moist towelettes and toilet paper).
  • Matches and waterproof container.
  • Whistle.
  • Extra clothing.
  • Kitchen accessories and cooking utensils, including a can opener.
  • Photocopies of credit and identification cards.
  • Cash and coins.
  • Special needs items, such as prescription medications, eye glasses, contact lens solutions, and hearing aid batteries.
  • Items for infants, such as formula, diapers, bottles, and pacifiers.
  • Other items to meet your unique family needs.

If you live in a cold climate, you must think about warmth. It is possible that you will not have heat. Think about your clothing and bedding supplies. Be sure to include one complete change of clothing and shoes per person, including:

  • Jacket or coat.
  • Long pants.
  • Long sleeve shirt.
  • Sturdy shoes.
  • Hat, mittens, and scarf.
Or visit their website for additional information.

Did I tell you I am losing my mind?

bigstockphoto_Crazy_Hair_652735.jpgWell I am. Literally wondering if my kids are safe with me because I am getting to be soooo forgetful!  I am not kidding although my mom says it is just because I have so much going on.  Hmmm let me see, starting new business, moving cross country, remodeling a house, oh and mothering three kids.  I guess that will do it. Does anyone else feel like they are losing their mind?!?!  P.S. If you work with social services and are reading this, I AM just kidding!

Turtlenecks in the Summer?

CSH-004367.jpgRemember that movie with Diane Keaton where she goes into a whole explanation on why older women need turtlenecks for all seasons? I am beginning to feel that way too! I just bought a turtle neck with no sleeves just to hide the wrinkles!  I can't believe I am getting the body that needs turtlenecks all year long! This one below by Victoria Secret is only $11.99!

Dead Weight?

bigstockphoto_Cemetery_1125059.jpgHave you thought about the fact that you can be a burden after you are dead? Maybe it is time to consider... a green funeral!!?  Sounds like an over the top eco-zealot created it, but it makes so much sense! We all want our kids to inherit a healthy earth, and an easy way to do it is by writing down your wishes for a green funeral.  I mean do you really need to be embalmed??  They just cover your body in toxic yuck that seeps into the soil.  Or cremated spewing toxic fumes into the air...Check out these facts:

Approximately 56,600,000 people die each year around the world .

50 million trees are cut down in India each year for funeral pyres. This releases 8 million tons of carbon dioxide.

There are now more than 200 green and woodland burial sites in the UK.

Up to 16% of all mercury emissions in the UK come from crematoria because of the fillings in teeth. This percentage is expected to increase to 25% by 2020.

1.6 million tons of reinforced concrete is buried in the USA each year in the construction of vaults.

Eat This!

hipchick_guide.jpg

The Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics is hilarious.I bought the book at the WholeFoods, not because I wanted to actually do the diet but because my friend's dad, Michio Kushi, started the Macrobiotic movement in America and the forward was written by him. Turns out the author, Jessica Porter, had me in hysterics. And her self deprecating humor helped me identify with her enough that I said to myself, hmmm if she can do it so can I! So today is my first day eating grains, no dairy, no meat, no sugar. I am starving!! But supposedly soon I will be full of energy, dewey skin, and clear mind! I will keep you posted...

Toxic Stress Reduction

bigstockphoto_Aromatherapy_1412424.jpg

We all worry about the plethora of toxins we absorb everyday in our outside environment - whether in the water we drink, air we breath, or the food we eat.  But another major toxin that we tend to overlook is a STRESS.  So even if you are already driving that Prius and buying organic produce, if your worrying or fretting about things too much then your giving way to toxic stress. The good news is that this is one environmental clean-up you and you alone can control!  Make a ritual - like a nightly bath, a cup of tea, a favorite candle and a magazine.  Whatever it is that allows you to free your mind from whatever worries you - do it for ten minutes a day and feel the difference.

Every Day Peace

bji1.gif

When I go to yoga every now and again I feel so nurtured and peaceful. One of the reasons is that the teacher sometimes reads these passages from a beat up old book he has that seem so wise and spiritual. Finally I remembered to write down the title and get it. The book is called Every Day Peace, Letters for Life by Baba Hari Dass. So now when I am feeling overwhelmed about something I can quickly find that place of peace by reading a few excerpts from his book. And a few of them I share with my kids because a Yogi's wisdom sometimes is heard louder than a mothers.

Beets and Benefits

Thumbnail image for bigstockphoto_Cooked_Beets_With_Fresh_Tarrag_1289389.jpg

Beets are a food to love as they are both nutritious and delicious - they are a hearty vegetable high in nutrients and low in calories and fat.  Beets contains large amounts of soluble and insoluble fibers. These colorful root vegetables help fight heart disease, birth defects and certain cancers, especially colon cancer.

Beets are also rich in folic acid, calcium and iron. Seems like they are made for us women? These important vitamins are critical to lifelong health for men and children as well because deficiencies in folic acid have been linked to heart disease and cervical cancer.

So as summer approaches an easy beet salad makes a perfect appetizer or side dish.  Check out this amazing recipe  offered at Epicurious.com.
