Quantum Wellness

quantum.jpg
Wondering what inspired Oprah's 21-day cleanse? It was reading this book by Kathy Freston and of course, now it's a bestseller. But I love that it inspires so many to change their eating habits - even in small ways - that improves both your personal health and the environment. We're all in need of a little (lot) of personal and global well-being.

Use It or Lose It

Good scientific evidence indicates the more we use our brains, the more chance we have to not lose it. Just like the bodies' muscles, exercise of the brain makes it stronger and sharper. I don't know about you, but I'm thinking new mental connections and pathways might be a look on us this pre-baby boomer. Play along at happy-neuron.com.

Age of Home May Affect Your Weight

bigstockphoto_Couple_Walking_Their_Dog_126995.jpg
A new study found that the year your neighborhood was built may be just as important as diet and exercise for shedding pounds. Those who live in neighborhoods built before 1950 are trimmer than their counterparts who reside in more modern communities, the study reported.

"The older neighborhoods had a reduced level of obesity because they were generally built with the pedestrian in mind and not cars," said Ken Smith, a co-author of the study and professor in the department of family and consumer studies at the University of Utah. "This means they have trees, sidewalks and offer a pleasant environment in which to walk." msnbc.

Healthy Alternatives In Your Baked Goods

Thumbnail image for bigstockphoto_Cookies_1724999.jpg
You can make your favorite organic baked goods with much less sugar and fat, according to the July issue of the Mayo Clinic Health Letter. Reducing sugar by one-third to one-half works in many recipes. To enhance sweetness, increase the amount of vanilla extract, cinnamon or nutmeg. Applesauce, mashed banana or prune puree can replace up to half the butter, shortening or oil in many recipes.Use reduced-fat or fat-free ingredients instead of high-fat products. For example, fat-free, 1% or 2% milk can replace whole milk; evaporated fat-free milk can replace regular evaporated milk. Fat-free plain yogurt or low-fat sour creams can be substituted for sour cream. Light cream cheese or low-fat cottage cheese often substitutes nicely for cream cheese. Organic Authority.

Detoxing your space is critical to your health and well-being. Take these tips from Planet Green to do it naturally: "You can improve your indoor air quality-without replacing your decor-by keeping rooms properly ventilated and opening windows from time to time. Regularly cleaning or replacing air-conditioner and furnace filters and keeping air ducts clear is another effective step in removing pollutants such as bacteria, mold, viruses, and pollen from indoor air, while helping keep equipment working at maximum efficiency. Another simple tip: Remove shoes at the door, which means you'll track fewer toxins throughout the house."

Hypnotherapy To Cure Your Bad Habit

bigstockphoto_Hypnosis_2889661.jpg
But unlike stage and screen hypnosis, hypnotherapy -- in which patients are verbally guided into a "trance" by a trained psychotherapist -- is a legitimate treatment tool endorsed by the American Psychological Association. "Hypnosis has a long and checkered history," says Jean Fain, a psychotherapist who uses hypnosis in her Massachusetts practice. "But there's a growing body of quality research showing that it can help with everything from behavioral problems and bad habits to anxiety and irritable bowel syndrome." Read more at msnbc.
