Fair Trade Sports

400px.Soccer.White.jpg
My kids signed up for AYSO soccer this fall, and I need to get them some gear.  I hear you can get things like a new soccer balls and other sporting equipment at Fair Trade Sports. Fair Trade Sports is a company started by Scott James that generates dollars for children's charities through the sale of the world's first line of eco-certified Fair Trade sports balls for soccer, football, basketball, rugby, volleyball, and more. Seventy percent of any sports ball by weight is the interior air bladder -- the thing that makes the ball bounce. Those air bladders are made of latex, a rubber product. Fair Trade Sports uses eco-certified rubber from forests in Sri Lanka and India that have been certified by Forest Stewardship Council. Their sports balls are also certified Fair Trade by the FLO, the Fairtrade Labeling Organization International, which ensures fair wages and a healthy work environment for the workers who make the balls.

Not Just A Cool Building

ob2.jpg
How cool is this building? It happens to be located somewhere between Toledo and Cleveland and is an  educational facility setting a shining example of sustainable building for ecological and human health. Completed in 2000, the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies is an ongoing green build experiment, as its energy performance is studied and adjusted as green technologies continue to evolve. It gives great hope that you can live in the midwest and still efficiently harvest solar power. inhabitat.

Scissor Warning

DGG-019753.jpgKatie Holmes' new haircut on anyone else might look too much like a dude.  I am always tempted to cut my hair like that... actually I did cut it like that at least four times, and every time I look back at the photos I think, not so much.  It is only a very few women that can pull this off with a sexy flair. The rest of us just look fugly.

The "slugs" is a term referring to the suburban commuters, looking to save time, money, and the environment by "slugging," a unique type of freestyle carpooling. Read more about it at Planet Green.

The Olympics...Oh My

Okay, first of all how cool was the opening ceremony the other night? If you didn't see it, then get a hold of a recording because it was human genius!  I was really not that into the Olympics until I started following some of the athletes personal stories.  Pretty amazing stuff.  And seriously, one of the more amazing things is that a third of the countries participating I have never even heard of!  Dijibouti, Moldova,Vanuatu to mention a few!  Great geography lesson for me and the kids! And how about how fun it is to root for the home team!?  USA basketball beat China today (Yao Ming shown above), in a much needed redemption. Go USA!

Bench of Memory at Slavery's Gateway

Bench600.jpg
SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S.C. -- Toni Morrison has said that her acclaimed novel "Beloved," which features the ghost of a baby killed by her enslaved black mother, came out of the need for a literature to commemorate slaves and their history. "There is no suitable memorial, or plaque, or wreath or wall, or park or skyscraper lobby," Ms. Morrison said in a 1989 magazine interview. "There's no 300-foot tower, there's no small bench by the road." This weekend, on Sullivan's Island, off the South Carolina coast, Ms. Morrison, the Nobel laureate, and some 300 people held a memorial ceremony to dedicate her long-awaited "bench by the road." The crowd included members of the Toni Morrison Society, National Park Service rangers, Ms. Morrison's friends and family, and people from Charleston and nearby areas. They gathered Saturday afternoon under a blazing sun, accompanied by the rhythms of African drums, for a service that included the pouring of libations and a daisy wreath cast into the water to remember their ancestors.
